The History of a Steel Legend The M1 Abrams tank is a true icon of American engineering. Production began in 1980, and the vehicle itself was named after General Creighton Abrams, the charismatic commander of the 37th Armored Battalion, who fought during World War II and later became the leader of the American forces in Vietnam. It was created to fight the armored forces of the Soviet Union. However, it saw combat primarily in conflicts in the Middle East. The first version of the American tank had a 105 mm gun, and from 1985, a version of the Abrams designated M1A1 with a 120 mm gun was produced under license from the Federal Republic of Germany.
